蔡旻佑 - 寂寞,好了

  • Oct. 25th, 2009 at 7:37 PM

E.T. aka Fian Fazlie aka Serial Stalker

  • Sep. 21st, 2009 at 1:48 PM

A couple of weeks back, I had a brush with this E.T. lookalike, Fian Fazlie.

I had THE most amusing conversation via FB email with this thing, who claimed that I had, well, fetched him from school (Bishan ITE), by CAR and DRIVEN him to Seletar Resevoir to walk around, before DRIVING him back to Thompson Plaza, whereby I, supposedly, dined with E.T.
(View the conversation here:
http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h35/ryanboi/psychopath.jpg

He wanted to add my on Facebook, which I politely declined. Because, well, I don't know him. And well, I don't add E.T.s to my friend's list on Facebook.

Then, this E.T., proceeded to continue stalking me, from TWITTER (
http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h35/ryanboi/twitter.jpg)

And then, he proceeded to stalk me through my FRIEND'S Facebook:

(

(

claiming that...

(E.T.'s messages)

"of cos angry lor... i met somebody who stays at bishan. he picked me up from school one day and he drove to macritchie reservoir to walk walk and you know wad~ he was damn nice to me.. .then after that he took me out for dinner at thomson plaza.. yeah. ate dinner at subway then he drove me back.. "

"wah.. he is i cnt reach for like dunno how many days lor.. and he's in sg wad...
plus, i think he has a diff number where he use it to cheat all the young and innocent boys"

"he drive mazda 323.. claiming to be his dad's..
oh. that time when we did it.. his was shaved and uncut.. quite long?
he told me he was from Saint Andrew's... i cnt remember he went to which poly after that.. was it SP or TP?? cnt rmb~ "

"actually he wanted to screw me that day.. but i didnt want to.. we were in the public toilet...
i dunno whether all those things he told me were true la.. he said his workplace was at bedok...?!??!
oh.. he said he gym at somewhere near his place.. not the fancy gym that most ajs' go to..."

(end of E.T.'s messages)

Of course, due to this nonsensical burst of rubbish emotion he had, and trying to hint that I apparently "had sex with an alien", I had to clarify the situation, that well,

Firstly, I wasn't interested in Aliens.
Secondly, I don't have a driving license.
Thirdly, I don't drive, walk around parks and fuck aliens.

And well well... a resourceful friend of mine managed to dig out a post of E.T.'s past:

... where E.T. stalked straight guys at random... (

Speed Up Your Windows XP Netbook

  • Jul. 17th, 2009 at 9:03 PM

Most modern desktops and laptops have power to spare, but netbooks are notoriously pokey. Consequently, you should turn off any operating-system features that can make your Lilliputian PC even slower.

If your system runs Windows XP, as most netbooks do, here's an easy way to squeeze some extra speed out of it:

1. Open the Control Panel.

2. Double-click System.

3. Click the Advanced tab, followed by the Settings button in the Performance section.

4. By default, the Visual Effects tab is usually set to Let Windows choose what's best for my computer. Windows knows best?! Hardly. Change the setting to Adjust for best performance. As you'll see, this disables all XP's visual effects.

5. Click OK, then wait a few seconds while Windows readjusts itself. Click OK again to exit System Properties.

While this leaves you with a plainer, less visually exciting Windows, it also lets your netbook devote its minimal processing power to more important things, like running apps and crunching data.

Here’s a simple hack that will let your favorite apps run faster on your netbook with Windows XP.  (I think it also works with Vista too or your desktop but mainly, it would make a difference in a netbook since netbooks don’t have powerful CPUs)

My firefox has been slowing down on my netbook but you can make it run faster on your netbook simply by going to Windows Task Manager->right click on the app you want to speed up such as Firefox->then set it to higher than “normal”.

This simple hack would be pivotal for efficient netbook computing so try it out!

Asus Eee PC 1005HA

  • Jul. 15th, 2009 at 8:14 PM

I've finally gotten the Asus Eee PC 1005HA (White) to replace my very outdated Eee PC 900. Decided to get the white because the black screen rim provides for some nice contrast to the netbook. All black looked boring and attracted fingerprints like nobody's business.

Excellent machine, about 8 hours of battery life with wireless on and multitasking.

The 92% full sized keyboard also makes a hell of a difference in comparison. I was able to type out my mid year review on the 1005HA without feeling any discomfort or irritation =P

Aloha!

Updating from my new Asus Eee PC 1005HA. The battery on this thing seems to last forever. I brought it out and used it for about 4 hours and it still has 50% battery left!

Goodbye Squeakie...

and for one last time... I laid my pet hamster Squeakie to rest... for one last time, I laid some sunflower seeds, rose bark and fresh lettuce beside him... goodbye Squeakie, you will be dearly missed.

This song, "Cheater" is an unreleased song by Michael Jackson. Thought that it would be a refreshing change from all the usual MJ stuff you've been seeing. The person who put up this video has edited it very well. Enjoy!

WASHINGTON — The Obama administration will endorse a U.N. declaration calling for the worldwide decriminalization of homosexuality that then-President George W. Bush had refused to sign, The Associated Press has learned.

U.S. officials said Tuesday they had notified the declaration's French sponsors that the administration wants to be added as a supporter. The Bush administration was criticized in December when it was the only western government that refused to sign on.

The move was made after an interagency review of the Bush administration's position on the nonbinding document, which was signed by all 27 European Union members as well as Japan, Australia, Mexico and three dozen other countries, the officials said.

The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because Congress was still being notified of the decision. They said the administration had decided to sign the declaration to demonstrate that the United States supports human rights for all.

"The United States is an outspoken defender of human rights and critic of human rights abuses around the world," said one official.

"As such, we join with the other supporters of this statement and we will continue to remind countries of the importance of respecting the human rights of all people in all appropriate international fora," the official said.

The official added that the United States was concerned about "violence and human rights abuses against gay, lesbian, transsexual and bisexual individuals" and was also "troubled by the criminalization of sexual orientation in many countries."

"In the words of the United States Supreme Court, the right to be free from criminalization on the basis of sexual orientation 'has been accepted as an integral part of human freedom'," the official said.

Gay rights and other groups had criticized the Bush administration when it refused to sign the declaration when it was presented at the United Nations on Dec. 19. U.S. officials said then that the U.S. opposed discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation but that parts of the declaration raised legal questions that needed further review.

According to negotiators, the Bush team had concerns that those parts could commit the federal government on matters that fall under state jurisdiction. In some states, landlords and private employers are allowed to discriminate on the basis of sexual orientation; on the federal level, gays are not allowed to serve openly in the military.

It was not immediately clear on Tuesday how the Obama administration had come to a different conclusion.

When it was voted on in December, 66 of the U.N.'s 192 member countries signed the declaration _ which backers called a historic step to push the General Assembly to deal more forthrightly with anti-gay discrimination.

But 70 U.N. members outlaw homosexuality _ and in several, homosexual acts can be punished by execution. More than 50 nations, including members of the Organization of the Islamic Conference, opposed the declaration.

Some Islamic countries said at the time that protecting sexual orientation could lead to "the social normalization and possibly the legalization of deplorable acts" such as pedophilia and incest. The declaration was also opposed by the Vatican.

With all due respect to the well-meaning “concerned parents” out there, this is starting to sound like a dodgy GP essay to me.

Apparently, because my students and I “discuss topics such as the legalisation of gay marriage and parents of the same sex forming families through adoption” in class, I am guilty of promoting homosexuality.*

Right.

But never mind. MOE has already come to the rescue with their statement that “GP lessons are meant to promote critical thinking” and GP teachers “should also adhere to social norms and values of our mainstream society”.*

Oh yes, apparently one can facilitate critical thinking, that is, the reasoned questioning of assumptions, norms and values AND fully reinforce and adhere to social norms at the same time.

And wait, I see this again, in the debate on sexuality education and just what should be said about homosexuality:

1. Homosexuality is against the social norms and values of mainstream society.
2. Homosexuality is illegal and considered unnatural under Singapore law.

The first thing any student of GP (or indeed, any human being who knows anything about world history) will realise, is that social norms change.

Secondly, if you insist on going by “mainstream” values and beliefs, you may like to follow 43% of Singaporeans and look to Buddhism, which views homosexuality on neutral grounds, as opposed to Christianity (15%) and Islam (15%).

In any case, the legal argument will only hold as long as homosexual acts are considered illegal in Singapore.... and judging from the force of change in the world, frankly my dear, you can't hold the dam for much longer.

Singapore's law criminalising homosexual acts is based on British law – which decriminalised this in 1967.

Other countries which have decriminalised homosexuality include France (1791), The Netherlands (1811), Brazil (1830), Ottoman Empire (1858), Germany (1871), Japan (1880), Italy (1889), USSR (1922), Denmark (1930), Iceland (1940), Switzerland (1942), Sweden (1944), Greece (1951), Thailand (1956), Israel (1963), Chad (1967), Canada (1969), Kosovo (1970), Australia (1981), South Africa (1994), China (1997) etc.

This shows an increasing acceptance that personal preferences that do not harm anyone else should not be governed (in this case, criminalised) by the state. As with the wearing away of all other forms of inequality, I believe this discrimination of homosexuals cannot last.

So what are we left with?

Are we justifying a brand of education with reasons that won't hold weight for much longer?

You may argue that making something legal doesn't make it right, and you have a point.

But then that would depend on what you consider “right”, which really is a moral issue and one that concerns personal belief.

So I have two points for you:

1. Personal beliefs – religious or otherwise – should not influence the laws of a secular society. The onus is on parents and preachers to educate their children in these beliefs. Say what you want at the pulpit, not in Parliament, and certainly, do not foist this responsibility onto your child's teachers in secular schools.

2. It is unfair, impractical and dangerous to insist that youths be given only the old rules when they live in a completely different world. Parents, if you insist on a black-and-white moral education for your children, you only drive them into secrecy when they need you most. If teachers cannot teach openly and factually, rest assured that the internet will.

As an educator and maybe future parent, I admit I am less concerned about whether my children are homosexual/transsexual/(fill in the blank) or not, and more concerned that they should always respect others and themselves, never discriminate, always critically examine issues, always feel free to share their thoughts with me without fear of condemnation, always love and always be loved no matter what.

This is my hope.

PS. If you think your children will rush to become homosexual/transsexual/(fill in the blank) because of my words, I THANK YOU for crediting me with such influence! By the way, your children are smarter than you think....
